How to Spot Common Chat Scams Before You Click

Many chat scams rely on the same few patterns even when the story changes. Learning those patterns is more useful than memorizing a list of suspicious phrases.

Unexpected urgency

Messages that demand immediate action are designed to reduce thinking time. Be cautious with “your account will close,” “send this code now,” or “this offer expires in minutes” when the request comes from a stranger.

Requests for codes or login information

One-time verification codes, passwords and recovery links are private. A legitimate community moderator should not need your password.

Shortened or disguised links

A link can lead somewhere different from what the visible text suggests. If you are unsure, do not open it. Navigate to the service through your own bookmark or search instead.

Money plus secrecy

Requests to buy gift cards, transfer cryptocurrency, pay a “release fee,” or keep the payment secret are strong warning signs.

When in doubt, block the sender and report the interaction. A real opportunity can survive a few minutes of verification.
