A borrowed flame
The lantern above the bridge had burned for two hundred years. On Sora's first night as keeper, it went out.
She followed the old instructions exactly: a spoon of river water, a pinch of ash, the name of someone who had kept a promise. Nothing happened. Below the bridge, boats waited in the dark.
Her teacher had left a second book hidden beneath the first. Its pages recorded every earlier failure. The lantern was not fueled by loyalty, as the village claimed. It dimmed when a promise was used to silence somebody who could no longer keep it.
Sora thought of the ferryman, who had sworn he would never retire. His hands had been trembling for months. She took the lantern down and went to find him.
