Three knocks
The house knocked at six every evening: three soft taps from the sealed room beside the stairs. Tomas checked the pipes, the windows and the roof. The sound continued when the heating was off.
His instructions said the room held old furniture and should remain locked. The owner lived far away and answered questions slowly. Tomas began eating in the kitchen before six, as though a change of schedule could make the sound belong to somebody else.
On Friday, he heard it from the other side of the kitchen wall. Three taps. A pause. Three more.
He found the plans in a cupboard. The room beside the stairs was not a room on the original drawing. It was the opening to a service passage that ran through the house.
