The passage
With the owner's permission and a builder beside him, Tomas opened the sealed door in daylight. Cold air moved through a passage lined with old bell wires.
A wooden signal box hung loose against the wall. Wind entered through a damaged vent and pushed its arm three times before the mechanism reset. The explanation was disappointingly simple until they found why it had been installed.
A woman had once lived in the upstairs room after an illness made the stairs difficult. The taps were a signal to her family: tea, company or help. Someone had kept the box after it was no longer needed.
Tomas imagined waiting for an answer in that quiet room. The passage felt colder, though the builder was already repairing the vent.
