When do the Perseids peak in 2026?
The Perseids are active from 17 July to 24 August 2026. The International Meteor Organization lists the main peak on the night of 12–13 August, with the strongest activity around 13 August. New Moon occurs on 12 August, so there is essentially no bright Moon washing out the sky during the peak.
The exact strongest hour is only part of the answer. Your useful observing window also depends on when true darkness begins, how high the Perseid radiant is, and whether clouds or city glow block faint meteors.
The best local time is usually after midnight
The radiant rises during the evening and climbs higher toward dawn across much of the Northern Hemisphere. That means the number of visible meteors usually improves after midnight, even when the formal maximum occurs earlier in your time zone. Plan at least 60–90 minutes under the sky. Your eyes need roughly 20–30 minutes away from bright screens to adapt.

Where should you look?
The meteors appear to trace back toward the constellation Perseus, but staring directly at the radiant is not the best strategy. Lie back and watch a broad area of sky roughly 30–60 degrees away from the radiant. Choose the darkest open sky available and keep trees, buildings and streetlights behind you.
You do not need a telescope. A wide, unobstructed view catches more streaks.
Use a dim red light and lower your phone brightness before stepping outside.
Meteors arrive irregularly. A quiet ten minutes can be followed by several bright streaks.
Will you really see 100 meteors per hour?
The often-quoted figure of about 100 is a zenithal hourly rate: a standardized maximum under ideal conditions with the radiant overhead and a very dark sky. The IMO notes that normal rural observations near maximum are often closer to 30–50 Perseids per hour. City viewers may see far fewer because faint meteors disappear in skyglow.
