Why 12 August 2026 is exceptional in Spain
During the evening, a total solar eclipse crosses much of northern Spain from west to east. Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional describes it as the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula in more than a century. Hours later, the Perseids reach their annual maximum under a new Moon.
A realistic evening-to-dawn timeline
- Late afternoon:Arrive early, confirm the western horizon and avoid last-minute traffic.
- Evening eclipse:Keep safe solar viewers on throughout every partial phase. Remove them only during confirmed totality and put them back on immediately afterward.
- After sunset:Eat, rest and move only if your meteor site is different and the route is safe.
- After midnight:Let your eyes adapt and watch a broad dark sky as the Perseid radiant climbs.
- Pre-dawn:The strongest meteor geometry arrives before morning twilight ends the session.
The best eclipse site may not be the best meteor site
The eclipse occurs with the Sun low in the west. A coastal or elevated site with a clean western horizon can be ideal. For meteors, you need a dark all-sky view with minimal artificial light. One location can serve both purposes, but do not assume it will.

Meteor rules do not apply to the Sun
Watching meteors with the naked eye is safe. Looking at the partially eclipsed Sun without proper protection is not. Use compliant eclipse viewers during all partial phases. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need a solar filter secured over the front of the optics.
Never use ordinary sunglasses, smoked glass, exposed film or an unfiltered optical view of the Sun.
Build a plan that can move
