THE READING ROOM

The suitcase in the hall

Rina left her suitcase in the hallway for three days. Unpacking felt like agreeing that she had returned for good. Everyone asked whether the job had been difficult. Nobody asked what she wanted now.

On Thursday, she walked past the shuttered repair shop where she had learned to mend her schoolbag. A notice offered short-term use of the empty space. She wrote down the number without a plan.

The landlord asked what she intended to sell. "Nothing yet," Rina said.

He almost ended the call. Then she explained an idea: a Saturday table where people could bring things they did not know how to fix. No promises, just a place to try. He agreed to lend the key for one morning.
