A slower direction
The cloth marked the path to a small orchard. Its owner offered directions from her gate, then asked whether they had seen the rain clouds above the ridge. They had been watching the map instead.
She showed them a sheltered route that returned to the village. The tiny square on their paper was her brother's old lookout, now closed because the steps had weakened. The view was still there. The safe way to reach it was not.
Sam put the camera away reluctantly. Ben was annoyed at the wasted morning. Leila thanked the woman and asked about the orchard. Soon they were hearing how the road had been built by neighbors carrying stones, one weekend at a time.
The clouds reached the ridge while they were still under the gate's roof.
