Inside yesterday
Nell stood in her old kitchen. Rain struck the window. Her phone lay beside a cup of tea. On the screen was her grandfather's number, waiting for a call she had postponed until the weekend.
She reached for it. Her hand passed through the phone. Outside, the younger Nell rushed toward the bus stop, certain she would have time later.
The scene shifted. Her grandfather was at his own table, telling a neighbor about the granddaughter who could fix anything. He was smiling. He was not waiting beside the telephone, miserable and abandoned, as Nell had imagined for years.
She could not give him the call. But she could hear what he had actually said. "She'll come when she can. She knows where the biscuits are."
Yesterday softened around her.
