The hidden pocket
The coat arrived at the small museum with a box of household donations. Its label said only Winter coat, approximately mid-century. Ana noticed that one pocket had been stitched closed from the inside.
She opened the seam carefully and found a photograph of two women standing outside a workshop. On the back were their first names and the words We managed.
The donor remembered the coat belonging to her grandmother, but not the second woman. Ana searched the local archive and found a workshop ledger with the same names. One appeared under Owner. The other appeared under Apprentice, crossed out and replaced with Partner.
The dates covered a winter when the town's main factory had closed. A small change in the ledger suddenly seemed worth investigating.
