A partnership in the records
The workshop repaired clothing, but the surviving papers showed something more. Its owners had trained women who could no longer afford to leave home for work. Pieces were collected, finished in kitchens and returned by bicycle.
Ana found a newspaper notice that praised the workshop without naming either woman. A later account credited a male relative with starting it. The ledger, receipts and training notes told a different story.
She was careful about what the documents could not prove. Friendship appeared in the photograph. Business responsibility appeared in the records. Neither needed an invented speech to matter.
The donor brought a letter describing the second woman as "the person who made the difficult things possible." Ana added it to the research file, with the family's permission.
